Helen Tabor Obituary

Born in the small lakeside community of Scotchtown, New Brunswick, the original gathering spot of the Hunter Clan, on a small dairy farm. A piece of paradise.

Helen was the youngest of five children [Gladys, Harold, Russell and Kaye] and daughter of Allan Ward Hunter and Bertella (Bertie) Bonheur Randall. Helen, after high school, left to go to the big city of Fredericton for secretarial college. At a chance encounter at a dance in Sussex she met Norman, her husband of 63 years.

A military wife, Helen travelled with Norman throughout Canada in service of country. Through all the upheavals she kept her family first as they navigated new provinces, communities and schools. She was the glue. Upon Norman’s retirement from the Royal Canadian Air Force, they settled in Fredericton where Mom continued to work as a Library Technician at UNB Fredericton. These were happy years, back home in New Brunswick and close to their families.

Helen had three great loves in life: family, immediate and extended; Scotchtown and her cherished cottage and time back on the family farm; and maple walnut ice cream.

Not many people can go through a lifetime, particularly one of almost 93 years, and have no one say an unkind word. Helen can. She was universally loved and, importantly, liked.

Helen was predeceased by her husband Norman (2018) and her siblings. She is survived by her children, Brian (Rachael) Tabor, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia; Kevin (Françoise) Tabor, Rockland, Ontario; and Brenda (Doug) Trentowsky, Saint John, New Brunswick. She was a proud and much loved Grammie/Nanny to her cherished grandchildren, Donald (Lauren) Tabor, Stuart (Laura) Tabor, Michelle (Jeff) Tabor, Justin Tabor, Paige Trentowsky and Ryan Trentowsky. She was also Great-Grammie to great-grandson Oliver who shared with his Great-Grammie their birthday and her blue eyes. Helen is also survived by her sister-in-law Georgina (Tabor) Perkins, Saint John, New Brunswick, and, too numerous to list, a multitude of nieces and nephews.

A sincere thank you to the staff at Shannex Quispamsis for the kindness and care provided over these last few years and the medical staff at Saint John Regional Hospital for the support, comfort and the gift of a peaceful passing.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road, Saint John, NB (506-646-2424).  There will be no visitation. Interment at Scotchtown Cemetery on Thursday, July 31, 2025 at 1:30 p.m. with reception to follow at the Douglas Harbour Community Hall catered, appropriately, by Bertie’s Cafe. Mom is going home.

The family extends its sincerest thanks for the kindness and support given by family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Scotchtown Cemetery Fund or a charity of your choice is welcomed.
