With deep sadness and countless cherished memories, we announce the passing of Joseph Douglas Gordon "Gordie" Hachey, age 71, of Garnett Settlement, New Brunswick, who passed away peacefully on Monday, June 15, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.
Born on May 31, 1955, in Saint John, New Brunswick, Gordie was the son of the late Peter and Betty (Arseneault) Hachey. A hardworking and dedicated man, Gordie was the owner and operator of Port City Painters and later worked as a painter at the Saint John Regional Hospital, where he faithfully served for 24 years before his retirement.
In his younger years, Gordie's adventurous spirit led him to hitchhike across Canada in 1977, a journey that perfectly reflected his fearless nature and lifelong willingness to embrace whatever adventure came next. That same spirit was shared with his cherished North End buddies, a close-knit group who were "thick as thieves" through countless adventures, laughs, and memories over the years. Their bond stood the test of time, and these lifelong friends remained a constant presence in Gordie's life, visiting often and standing by his side right to the very end. The friendships he built were as enduring as they were meaningful, a testament to the kind of man Gordie was.
While Gordie was known for his strong work ethic, it was his devotion to family that defined his life. Family gatherings were sacred to him, and if someone couldn't attend, the date simply changed. Every holiday was marked by a special family meal, laughter around the table, and memories in the making. One of his most cherished traditions was the annual Christmas Eve rabbit hunt with his boys, a tradition that gave Nancy time to put the finishing touches on Christmas while the boys enjoyed an adventure with their dad.
Gordie was larger than life, a practical joker who never missed an opportunity to make someone laugh. Whether sharing stories, leading a card game, rolling dice with his friends, or teasing those he loved, he had a remarkable ability to bring joy to those around him. His "dart framily" held a special place in his heart, and he treasured the friendships, camaraderie, and countless laughs they shared over the years.
An avid outdoorsman, Gordie's greatest passions included hunting, fishing, and spending time at his beloved camp in Belleisle. For more than 25 years, the annual Cains River Run over the Victoria Day long weekend was a treasured tradition, creating countless memories on fishing trips with his sons and friends. Many weekends were spent in Doaktown salmon fishing alongside the LeBlanc family, tying flies, practicing archery, and enjoying his passion for fly fishing and striped bass fishing on the Miramichi. Gordie loved being on the water, whether boating with family or casting a line in pursuit of the next catch. He was especially proud of teaching his boys not only a love of the outdoors but also the value of hard work, self-reliance, and practical skills. Through building projects, carpentry, mechanics, and countless lessons along the way, he helped shape them into capable and independent men. His sons fondly remember hunting trips with their dad and the excitement of harvesting their first deer or moose by his side.
Above all else, Gordie cherished his role as husband, father, and grandfather. He and Nancy shared 41 wonderful years of marriage filled with love, adventures, travels, and countless special moments together. Nothing brought him greater happiness than spending time with his grandchildren, Ethan, Mya, and Sophie, who were truly the light of his life. Whether swimming in the pool, sharing stories, or simply enjoying their company, "Papa" treasured every moment spent with them.
Gordie will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 41 years, Nancy; his sons Andrew (Crystal), Alex (Kala), and Adam (Jessica) and chosen son Terry (Melanie); his cherished grandchildren Ethan, Mya, and Sophie; his brothers Marcel (Jennifer) and Emile (Sheila); his dear cousin John Hachey, who was like a brother to him; his godson John Hachey Jr.; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
Besides his parents, Gordie was predeceased by his brother, Jules Hachey.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Allyson Evans, Dr. Mark Tutschka, Dr. Xiao, Dr. Yakobi of Internal Medicine, Dr. Bennett of the Emergency Department, and Dr. Trisha Daigle-Maloney and Dr. James Michael of the Saint John Regional Hospital Oncology Department. They also extend sincere thanks to the many nurses and support staff of 4C North Internal Medicine for their compassionate care. Special appreciation is extended to Tracy, Matthew and Mary Ellen for their kindness and exceptional care during Gordie's hospital stay, and to Heather, who shared a special "pepper bond" with him that always brought a smile to his face.
Visitation will be held on Friday, June 19, from 2:00–4:00 p.m. and 6:00–8:00 p.m. at Fundy Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, June 20, at 9:00 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Loch Lomond Road. Interment will take place at Union Cemetery, Belleisle Creek.
Though his family will miss his laughter, stories, guidance, and unwavering love, Gordie's legacy lives on in the traditions he created, the values he instilled, and the countless memories shared by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
For those who wish, memorial donations may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
