Gerry Harris Obituary

It’s with broken hearts that the family of Gerry "Gerald Earl" Harris announces his passing at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Wednesday December 3rd, 2025. Born on December 5, 1974, in Campbelton, NB, he was the son of the late David and Mary Louise (McGrath) Harris.

A 1993 graduate of St. Malachy’s Memorial High School, Gerry developed an early interest in computers and pursued complex and engaging courses. Throughout his life, he navigated the challenges of Retinitis Pigmentosa with resilience and determination. He often described the experience as demanding yet an insightful partnership that shaped his character and deepened his perspective. His earliest job was running a federal neighborhood computer site for teens where a student could be “suspended for swearing”.  After working at experience at call centers, Gerry joined "Innovatia", a multi service provider over 15 years ago.

A car enthusiast, Gerry loved automobiles of every kind. Even after voluntarily giving up his driver’s license, he never lost interest and enthusiastically joined his family and friends through countless car shows.

Deeply committed to his community, Gerry founded the “WE ARE PASSENGER” to advocate against the cancellation of bus passes in Saint John; He served as head of the Canadian Council for the blind’s Atlantic Sports and Recreation Weekend; was a founding board member of the NB Coalition of Person with Disabilities; contributed his time to the Saint John Ability Advisory Committee and was a former member of the Knights of Columbus. He also worked for a short time as a field reporter for the visually impaired, broadcasting nationally each month. He took great joy in participating in the “Blind Race” in Shediac, where visually impaired drivers raced blindfolded with a sighted friend to provide guidance.

Gerry is survived by the love of his life Melissa (Mailman); nephew Evan Bradbury; sister Margaret Ann Harris (Steven Green);nieces Kayla and Cathleen Ganong; aunt Anne Marie McGrath.

The family extends their deepest appreciation to everyone at the Saint John Regional Hospital for the exceptional and compassionate care Gerry received.
