Gerard “Gerry” J. Bennett passed away surrounded by the love of his family, following a courageous and determined fight with cancer that he faced with strength and grace until the very end.
Born on September 16, 1954, in St. Theresa’s, Newfoundland, Gerry was the son of the late Gordon J. and Loretta (King) Bennett. He carried with him the warmth, resilience, and quiet humour that defined his Newfoundland roots throughout his life.
Gerry was the loving and devoted husband of 51 years to Marie B. (Keating), his partner, best friend, and constant support. He was a proud and caring father to Darren Keating (Jennifer) and Leslie Clack (Brian), and a devoted grandfather to Krissa, Tyler, Levi, Jax and Riley. He was also a cherished great-grandfather to Kyleigh and Jasper, who lovingly knew him as “Popeye.” His family was his greatest pride, and his love for them was steady, unconditional, and deeply felt.
Gerry will be lovingly remembered by his many siblings: Danny (Marion) Bennett, Randall Bennett, Larry (Sue) Bennett, Gary Bennett, Wallace Bennett , Shane Bennett , Gordon (Tracey) Bennett, Myrtle (Dennis) Boissonneault, Judy (Carl) Bennett, Sandra Bennett, Dale (Bob) Langois, Melita (Chris) Robinson, Brenda (Peter) Howe, Winnie (LeRoy) Bennett, Janet (Jason) Bennett, and Rene Bennett, along with many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
In addition to his parents, Gerry was predeceased his beloved granddaughter, Drew Evelyn Keating, who held a special place in his heart.
For 25 years, Gerry worked at the Saint John Dry Dock and at Sureshot Line Painting for 19 years. Outside of work, he enjoyed the simple pleasures of life—hunting and fishing which created many memories with his good friend Anthony Preshyon; watching and talking baseball and hockey, a good game of darts, and spending time outdoors riding on the side-by-side. He was a loyal fan of the Chicago Blackhawks, and one of his most treasured memories was a family trip last April to the Bell Centre in Montreal to watch them play—made even sweeter by a thrilling shootout win.
Above all else, Gerry will be remembered as a loving, kind, and caring man—steady, gentle, and always there for those he loved.
The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to the Extra Mural team, his oncologist, Dr. Samantha Gray, and to the Palliative Care team, especially Dr. Emily Love, for the exceptional care, compassion, and support shown to Gerry and his family during this difficult time.
Arrangements are entrusted to Fundy Funeral Home. Visitation will take place on Thursday, January 29th from 2–4 and 6–8 PM. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Friday, January 30th at 12:00 noon from the Fundy Chapel, with visitation continuing for one hour prior to the service. Interment to follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
Memorial donations in Gerry’s memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society and would be greatly appreciated.
