George Nelson Willard - 1940-2022

It is with great sadness that the family of George Nelson Willard announce his passing on Sunday, September 25, 2022 at St. Joseph’s Hospital.  Born July 7, 1940 in Saint John, NB to the late Nelson and Mary (O’Leary) Willard.

George was a graduate of St. Malachy’s High School and attended St. Thomas University when it was in Chatham, NB. George was also a long standing member of IBEW Local 502.

George was an Electrician by trade, working for various companies in Saint John, NB, Sussex, NB, Cape Breton, NS and Jay Maine, USA.  He was a member of IBEW Local 502 for over 50 years.  He was a member and past President of the 70 Plus Seniors Club of the IBEW Local 502.  He was instrumental in the setting up of this Senior Club (first in the Maritimes).  He advocated and fought for a Senior’s Health Plan for the 70 Plus members and won.  George was an exceptional Basketball player for St. Malachy’s High School as well as the YMCA Flyers winning the Canadian Championship.  He was a top notch Goaltender for various teams in Saint John and Sussex.  Rounding out his career with the Moosehead Oldtimers Hockey Club. He was also a dedicated Hockey and Baseball coach with various teams throughout the Saint John area.

George is survived by his loving wife Lillian (Magee) Willard, brothers Roy Willard and Jim Willard of Saint John, NB, Sons Tim Willard (Tasha) of Grand Manan and Jayson Magee (Amanda) of Quispamsis, Daughters Tammy Willard (Tom) and Christa Magee (Brad) of Saint John, NB.  Grandchildren Amanda Willard (Cory), Cody Willard (Keisha), McKenzie Magee, Alyssa and Cohen Vautour all of Saint John, NB.  Several Great-Grandchildren, Nieces, Nephews, Cousins, and a great many of friends.  Exceptionally close friend Walter Teehan of Sussex, NB.  George was pre-deceased by his parents and his oldest daughter Susan Willard and Great Grandson Benjamin Willard.

George’s family wish to Thank and acknowledge the Doctors, Nurses and Staff of the CAM Unit and 8th Floor at St. Joseph’s Hospital for their excellent care and attention.

Arrangements are under the care of Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Rd, Saint John, NB (646-2424).  Following cremation, visitation will be held on Thursday, September 29, 2022 from 10am-2pm.  Following visitation there will be a graveside service at St. Joseph’s Cemetery on Westmorland Rd (across from East Point).

For those who wish, donations in George’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society, Diabetes Association or a Charity of the Donor’s choice.
