With deep love and sadness, the family of George Emery Barton, devoted husband of 37 years to Fran (Popple) Barton, announces his passing on September 19, 2025, at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born on September 1, 1937, he was the son of the late George and Agnus (Starkey) Barton.
George’s greatest joy in life was his family. He cherished every moment spent with them and was especially proud of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Family gatherings and holidays were among his happiest times, and he could always be found in the kitchen preparing the meal—accepting help when offered, but happiest when providing for those he loved. He especially treasured his role as “Poppy,” making memories on hockey bus trips and delighting in the annual family vacations. Each year, the children would plan a surprise destination, and George and Fran would simply pack a bag and head off for the adventure—memorable trips included visits to the nuclear bunker and Oak Island.
With a warm sense of humor and a playful spirit, George loved keeping busy. He had a card trick— “Little Mo”—that he performed countless times for his family, a mystery they still haven’t managed to solve.
George had a lifelong passion for horseshoes. He was proud to be a founding member of the Saint John Horseshoe Club and went on to serve as President of both Horseshoe Canada and Horseshoe New Brunswick. He formed lasting friendships across the country through the sport and, up until his passing, served as Director of the Horseshoe Hall of Fame.
His working life was dedicated to Marquis Construction at the Irving Refinery, where he was employed for 39 years. Outside of work, George enjoyed playing hockey—serving as captain and coach—along with darts, and bowling. He also had an eye for bargains, enjoyed yard sales, and spent over 20 years as a vendor at Rhoda’s. During the holiday season, he was often found spreading joy while dressed as Santa.
George will be deeply missed by his loving wife Fran; daughters Linda Barton (Kim Beckett) and Michele Tracey (Travis); son Joey Pitre (Della); son-in-law Donnie Folkins; grandchildren Mike (Jessica), Stephen, Brittany (Allan), David (Dallon), Shanna (Matt), Casey (Andrew), Cody (Adrianna), Savannah, Jordan (Meghan), Chris, Aric (Kara), and Jennifer (Hans); 21 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Helen Maher; nieces Elaine Orser, Sharon Orser, and Karen Orser; nephew Brian Orser; along with many cherished friends and his feline companion Casper.
In addition to his parents, George was predeceased by his daughters Mary Barton and Lori Ward (Rick), and his sister Gloria Orser.
Arrangements are under the care of Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road (506-646-2424), with visitation on Sunday, October 5, 2025, from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Stella Maris Church on Monday, October 6, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., followed by interment at Ocean View Memorial Gardens.
For those who wish, donations in George’s memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the S.P.C.A.
