Gene Mason

It is with sadness, yet appreciation for a life well lived, that the family of Alan Eugene (Gene) Mason, announce his passing on Monday, August 3, 2026, at Ridgewood Veterans Wing.

Born in Saint John on September 28, 1926, he was the son of the late Alan and Edna (Dobson) Mason and loving husband to the late Hilda (Hamm) Mason with whom he shared 69 years of marriage.

He is survived by his daughters Sandra Thorne, Donna (Frank) Henderson, Myra (Frank) Lozier, Lorna Whipple, Wanda (Eddie) Woodcock; sons Alan “Butch” (Dianne) Mason and Michael (Charlotte) Mason; brother Gary Mason; sister Dianne “Honey” Summerville; grandchildren Melinda Martin, Christine Halcrow, Greg Thorne, Angela Phelps, Jeff Henderson, Stephen Henderson, Louise Mason, Carla Minerella, Rick Mason, Wayne Lozier, Kim Hyatt, Paul Lozier, Chris Lozier, Tammy Whipple, Jeremy Whipple, Mike Mason, Lisa Mason, Spenser Mason, Scott Woodcock, Shawn Woodcock, Jennifer Woodcock; numerous great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren as well as nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife Hilda, he was predeceased by his sons-in-law David Thorne and Larry Whipple; brothers Joe and Jack Mason; sisters Lorna Flowers, June Thorne, Muriel Short, Abbie Brown and brothers-in-law Jim Summerville, Richard Thorne, Leslie Short and Ronnie Brown and sister-in-law Myrna Mason.

Gene was a Second World War Navy veteran and a long-time member of the Legion. Prior to retirement, he spent 40 years employed at Moosehead Breweries.

He found great joy in the outdoors. Whether he was hunting in the woods, casting a line while fishing, ATVing, or spending cherished time at his camp in Pocologan, with Hilda and family, he was most at peace surrounded by nature.

He had a passion for sports throughout his life, proudly playing rugby, hockey and baseball and later dedicated his time to coaching Little League. He rarely missed cheering on his beloved New York Yankees and was a faithful Toronto Maple Leaf’s fan.

He wasn’t much for travelling but greatly enjoyed his many day trips with his good friends, Ernie Ellingwood, Roger Soucy, and the late Paul Logan and Bob Veniot, creating memories and sharing plenty of laughter along the way.

The family would like to thank the Staff of Ridgewood Veterans Wing for the outstanding care Gene received during his stay. Your kindness and compassion will never be forgotten.

Visitation will be held at Fundy Funeral Home on Friday, August 7th, 2026, from 9-10:30 AM. The service will be held in the Chapel at 11AM followed by a reception. Interment will be held in Greenwood Cemetery. Donations in his memory may be made to Ridgewood Veterans Wing, the Alzheimer Society, or the charity of one’s choice.
