Freda G.M. Brownell

With heavy hearts, the family of Freda G.M. Brownell announces her passing on January 24, 2026. Born in Saint John on February 23, 1939, Freda was the beloved daughter of the late Frederick and Madeline (Reid) Brownell.

Freda will be lovingly remembered by her children: Madeline (Norman) Cobham, Ruth (Sandy) MacDonald, Cindy (David) Nugent, and Elizabeth (Richard) Golding. She was a cherished grandmother to Melissa (Jim) Daly, Kiki Maher, Lexie Nugent, Cory Calvin, Isabelle (Kyle) Nugent, Courtenay MacDonald, Morgan O’Donnell, Colin MacDonald, Jonathan (Lisa) Golding and Jessica Golding, , and a proud great-grandmother to Matthew, Christopher, and Allyson Daly; Avery and Stella Dempster; Jackson and Jayla Charlton; Easton Calvin; Ace Barrett; Zach Benware; Riley Golding; Riley Hamilton; and Rosa Killem. She is also lovingly remembered by her brother Cecil (Pat) Brownell; nieces and nephews Katie, Suzanne, Jason, Sean and Autumn and great niece Maria and great nephew Drew.

Freda had a kind and generous heart, evident in the deep love she shared with her family and friends. She truly loved being a mother, had a gift for liking everyone she met, and formed many meaningful friendships throughout her life. She especially cherished the special bond she shared with Tammy, her homecare worker, and fondly enjoyed their many adventures together.

She was predeceased by her daughters Debbie-Jo Calvin and Lesley Dale Cooper, her beloved grandparents Alice (“Nanny B”) and Charlie Brownell, and her special Aunt Hazel.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff of Carleton Kirk for their compassionate care, and to Pastor Malcolm for his love, support, and guidance.

Arrangements are entrusted to Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road, Saint John (506-646-2424). Visitation will take place at Grand Bay Baptist Church on Friday January 30 from 2-4 and 6-8, with a funeral service to be held on Saturday January 31 at 2:00pm at Grand Bay Baptist Church.
