With heartfelt sorrow, the family of Francis Gilbert Hughes, beloved husband of 62 years to Mary Jean (Roberts), announces his passing on June 24, 2025, at the Mill Cove Nursing Home. Born in Fredericton, NB, on February 17, 1940, he was the son of the late Francis and Mary Elizabeth “Lizzie” (Burgoine) Hughes.
Francis, affectionately known by many as “Fran,” “Bear,” and “Orca,” dedicated over three decades of his life to inspiring young minds at Saint John High School. Teaching was his profession, but he truly found his calling and passion in coaching and mentoring his students. His talents shone brightly as he coached football, basketball, and track and field, leaving a lasting impact on countless lives and inspiring generations of athletes.
In his younger years, Francis demonstrated his athletic talent by dominating the rugby pitch during his high school stay. He later went on to play hockey for the UNB Red Devils and football for the UNB Red Bombers, where he stood out as one of the leagues leading receivers. Francis also played Senior hockey in Saint John, and in later years, he continued his passion for the sport by playing many seasons with the Moosehead Old Timers. A true sports enthusiast, he was a lifetime member of basketball and football New Brunswick, served as Co-chairman of the East Coast games, as well as many other awards and accomplishments.
Saint John High School honors his legacy with the Francis Hughes Dedication to Sports Award, a testament to his enduring influence. He was immensely proud to present this award to two of his grandchildren, Shelby and Seth, celebrating the remarkable athletes they have become.
Beyond sports, Francis found joy in fishing, was a resourceful “handyman”, and loved collecting treasured items. His heart held a special place for Grand Lake, where he cherished spending summers peacefully puttering and enjoying time with family and friends. He could also be a prankster, always on the lookout for opportunities to play practical jokes on people he was close to.
He leaves behind a legacy of love and inspiration, deeply missed by his wife Mary Jean; children Mary Ellen (Edward Dupuis) deceased son Andrew “Andy” (Carol), Philip, Eric (Belinda), and; cherished grandchildren Kristofor, Shelby, Jeremy, Emily, Nicola, Seth, and Samantha; and great-grandchildren Adam and Oaklynn.
