During the early morning hours of October 6th, with the Hunter’s-Harvest moon shining brightly in the night sky, Eric gently passed away to a place of next adventure, making his spiritual way to connect with his most favorite time of year.
Oh my, how he loved life and the people that he met along the way. What someone had or what he could gain from them didn’t register on Eric’s compass and if he was your friend, a more loyal one would be a rare find. The great outdoors was where he found his spiritual ease. From the Passamaquoddy shores to the Cuts, or the camp at the Hardwoods, Eric smiled that big smile with a glint of charm as he happily tramped around discovering the hidden gems of Mother Earth. Shouts of “look at this”, could be heard when he found something unusual, and look out if you were doing his laundry as there was always something to be found in his pockets.
Academic learning wasn’t Eric’s deal, but give him something to take apart, carve or create, now that was the ticket! And with a welding ticket in hand, he made his living with pride, until a car accident changed his path. With determination, Eric learned skills of gardening, running a portable sawmill and perfecting his hunting skills following the rule of “if you shoot it, you eat it”. He never shot a porcupine again. Making pickles became an autumn happening and beet juice ran freely over the stove and floor with a laugh, a chuckle and “meh”, nothing that paper towel can’t clean up.
Eric experienced great loves, but nothing could outshine his greatest love of all, his daughter, Lauren. How his eyes lit up from the moment she was born and when he proudly introduced her to friends as, “my little monkey”. As Lauren grew, this endearment was only mentioned around family as it just wouldn’t do to say that in front of her friends. Lauren was the apple of his eye, the key to his soul. Together, on tramps through the woods, they found animal tracks, chewed spruce gum, climbed trees and hung hammocks, all the while searching the clouds for animal shapes. Spring brought fishing season and with rods in hand, he and Lauren set off for the river and streams with an excitement of hooking ‘the big one’. True to form, if you won’t eat what you caught, let it go.
Eric, we will miss you at family gatherings, your jokes, the way you viewed living and your care for those who found themselves in less fortunate times. As sad as your passing is for us, there is love and laughter as we reminisce about times shared with you. The memories we have of you are strong and will never be erased.
