Elsie Colleen (Hunter) Smith

With sadness, the family of Elsie Colleen (Hunter) Smith announce her passing at the Saint John Regional Hospital on November 6, 2021, after a brief illness. Born April 28, 1946 in Saint John NB, Elsie was one of the eight children of Evangeline (Toner) and John Hunter.

Elsie was a graduate of Simonds High School and then became a stay-at-home Mom. She always had a hobby on the go, enjoying knitting, crocheting, baking, playing guitar, painting, and writing poetry at various points in her life. An avid runner, she could often be seen jogging along the roads of Mispec and Red Head.

Throughout her life, Elsie demonstrated remarkable resilience and perseverance in her ability to bounce back from episodes of acute illness as she dealt with chronic mental health challenges. She leaves a deep impression and will be dearly missed by her three daughters, Eve Sears of Saint John, Rebekah Moore of Saint John and Martha Brillant (Sean) of Halifax. She was Nanny to six grandchildren (Julie, Shelby, Cole, Ashley, Christian and Charlotte) and six great-grandchildren (Rachel, Becca, Brantley, Zoey, Neil and Ruby).

Elsie is survived by five siblings, Phyllis Koval, Andy Hunter, Austin Hunter, Bonnie MacMillan and Reba Purdy, with whom she was especially close. She will also be missed by her close friend, Lloyd.  In addition to her parents, Elsie was predeceased by her cherished son, Reuben Smith, brothers Jack Hunter and Dale Hunter, as well as former husband Neil Smith.

Elsie will be resting at Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road (646-2424) with visiting hours taking place on Tuesday, November 9th, 2021 between 6-8 pm. Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday at 11 am from the Fundy Chapel. Interment to follow at Ocean View Memorial Gardens.

Due to COVID-19 health measures placed on indoor gatherings, all those 12 and older attending visitation and service will be required to wear masks and show proof of vaccination with a piece of government issued ID.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Elsie to the Canadian Mental Health Association or the Canadian Cancer Society.
