Ella B. McLeod, RN, BN, MSc., of Penobsquis, New Brunswick, passed away peacefully at the Kiwanis Nursing Home in Sussex on Monday, Nov. 10, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, leadership, and service.

Born in Penobsquis, Ella pursued her calling in nursing with dedication and excellence. A graduate of the Saint John General Hospital School of Nursing, she continued her studies at McGill University and Boston University, earning advanced degrees that reflected her commitment to the profession. Ella began her career teaching nursing in Saint John, N.B., before serving as a supervisor for Health and Welfare Canada in Ottawa for five years. Her journey then led her to Prince Edward Island, where she became Director of Nursing for the Prince Edward Island Hospital and School of Nursing, a position she held for 14 years. She was later appointed Director of Nursing for the Province of PEI, overseeing Public Health and Home Care Nursing.

During her time in PEI, Ella was instrumental in founding the Island Hospice Association and Charlottetown Meals on Wheels, initiatives that continue to benefit countless families and individuals. Her vision and leadership left an indelible mark on the province’s health care system.

Upon retirement, Ella returned to the Brick House, the McLeod homestead in Penobsquis, where she remained an active member of the Penobsquis United Baptist Church.

Ella is survived by her nieces and nephews: Brenda Lee Morrell (Doug), Gerald MacLeod (Catherine), Cynthia McEwen (Tim), Kenneth McLeod (Lesley), Sherri McLeod (Ramsey), Tannis McLeod (Yves), Scott McLeod (Pina), Samuel Shannon (Edith), Shirley Adair (Alton), Bob Shannon (Sue), Michael Dunfield (Linda), and Karl Dunfield (Shirley); as well as several great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was predeceased by her siblings: Mildred Shannon (Robert), Norman MacLeod (Melba), Josephine Dunfield (Havelock), Betty O’Laughlin (George), and William McLeod (Audrey); along with nephews: David Dunfield, Danny Dunfield, Joseph Dunfield; and nieces Joanne Gamble and Judy Shannon.
