With deep sadness, Doug’s family announces his passing at the age of 81.
Doug embraced life. He never met a stranger. He loved his family, friends, a good story and a good laugh, and spending every May through September on Wood Lake, fishing until the sun went down.
Born to parents Anna and Charlie Bradley, Doug spent his early years getting into (mostly) good trouble on the West Side. He began his work life with the railway and went on to make a career as an insurance adjuster with Co-Op.
He was predeceased by his loving wife, Leona, with whom he was married 51 years. Today, they are walking the beaches, collecting shells. Together again. He is no doubt also joyfully reuniting with his parents, sister Anne, brother Robbie, some dear old friends and a clowder of family cats who also went on before him.
Left behind to mourn are his daughter Rhonda, “favourite son-in-law” Brett (Russell, ON), his son Michael and grandchildren Anna and Noah (Saint John), brother Bruce and sister-in-law Debbie (Montreal), sister-in-law and brother-in-law Linda and Ahmed (Rothesay), brother-in-law Douglas (Toronto), sister-in-law Joan (Saint John), and brother-in-law Robert (Indiana). He will be remembered fondly by his nieces and nephews – his home is covered with cards and pictures from them, and their growing families.
In recent years, he found a lot of comfort and joy with his girlfriend Laurie Rogers (Belleisle). Members of his “Pink Slip Club” were a long-time, constant source of friendship and fun times. His neighbours Jake, Chrissy and Jack kept a caring eye out for him, as he did for them.
Those of us who loved him all agree: he was kind, generous, funny, independent and maddeningly stubborn. And we will miss him. Very much.
Not one to be accused of being “health-conscious,” we gratefully acknowledge the care and patience of Dr. Graham MacNeil and his trusty, steely office manager, Shelly. As his primary care team, they enabled Doug to keep on keeping on – held together with duct tape, the miracles of modern medicine and sheer will.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road. A celebration of life will be planned for spring. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Romero House or Bobby’s Hospice.
