Donna was the beloved little sister to three older brothers who she has pre deceased; Dave Wood (Dianne), Brian Wood (Karen), and Gary Wood (Irmgard). She was predeceased by both her parents David and Doris Wood.
She was born and raised just outside of Montreal and was a shy, sensitive child who loved to help others.
The love of helping others turned into a calling to be a nurse. She started at age 16 working at the Montreal General Hospital where she pursued her nursing studies, before spending a short time at St. John’s Hospital in Newfoundland. She said she would leave Newfoundland when the icebergs came. And the very day she left was when the first iceberg came down Iceberg Alley. She was always a poetic soul.
She loved to travel and explore different cultures. Backpacking around Europe, going behind the Iron Curtain, and getting escorted off a train at gunpoint were some of her favourite stories to tell.
She moved to Red Deer, Alberta with her (ex)husband Alan in 1979 and soon found her place at the Parson’s Clinic where she finished her career. At the Parson’s she was known for giving the gentlest of injections and having a sweet spot for her older patients and the ones living on the edges of society.
Throughout her life she has been a good friend; Rudi, Cheryl, and Caroline can all attest to that. She loved and treasured her friendships.
Family was also important to her and she was such a proud mom and Grammie to Selena James-Godbout (Charles), and grandson Mason James. They were her world, and even when she forgot everything else due to dementia she remembered them and would tell anyone who listened how wonderful they were. She loved them almost as much as she loved her sweets.
Dale, Derrick, JP, Natalie, Kurt, and Kyle will miss their Auntie Donna. She was always a soft spot to land and would love on them so they knew how important they were to her.
A special thanks to Katrina, Bruce, Francis, and residents at Always Here Care Home for making her final years ones of peace, belonging, and love. Also a special thanks to The Church of St. John and St. Stephen Nursing Home for making her final months warm and comfortable. We could not have asked for better care for our Mom and Grammie. She was calm, comfortable, and pain free at the end.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road, Saint John, NB (506-646-2424). Family and friends will be received on Saturday Sep 28, 2024 from 2-4 PM. Private family ceremony to follow.
