It is with great sadness the family announces the passing of Donald James Smith which occurred at Ridgewood Veteran’s Wing on Thursday, January 31st, 2019. Born August 25, 1926, in Hampton, NB, he was the son of the late Ed and Mabel (Ward) Smith.
Donald was a proud veteran of both World War II, and the Korean War. He served with the Merchant Navy from 1943-1949, with the Canadian Armed Forces from 1949-1953, and with the Canadian Coast Guard from 1954 until his retirement in 1985. Donald was also a proud member of the Korean Veterans Association and The Royal Canadian Legion #14.
Donald is survived by his wife Muriel (Gill) (Defazio) Smith, his step-children Ronald Defazio, Cynthia Kierstead (Mark), Louie Defazio (Lori) and Pamela Defazio, all of Saint John; his grandchildren Sharidan McLean (Ross), Jamus Kierstead, Max, Jessie and Daniel Defazio; and great-granddaughter Claire; as well as several cousins and friends. Donald was a loving and devoted husband, step-dad and grampy and will be sadly missed by all of those who knew him.
Arrangements are under the direction of Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road (646-2424). A Legion Tribute service will be held in the Fundy Funeral Home Chapel at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, February 4th, 2019 immediately followed by the funeral service. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until the time of service. Private family interment to take place at a later date. Donations in memory of Donald can be made to the Salvation Army or to Romero House.
