It is with heavy hearts that the family of David Garnett announce his passing after a yearlong courageous fight against lung cancer at the Saint John Regional Hospital on March 13, 2026, at the age of 72 years old. Born in Saint John on September 26, 1953, he was the son of the late Norman and Dorothy (Nee. Quinn) Garnett.
He leaves behind his stepdaughter Loriann (Houssein) Mzehem; step grandchildren Joshua and Samira; sister Elizabeth Garnett; brother-in-law Edmond Daigle; as well as several nieces, nephews, and many friends.
David spent many years working with The Princess of Acadia (Bay of Ferries), a place that became a second home to him. Later, he continued his hardworking spirit at Ready John until his retirement. No matter where he worked, he was known for his reliability, his stubborn determination, and his willingness to help anyone who needed a hand.
In his free time, he found comfort in the things he loved most: evening spent watching hockey – especially cheering on the Montreal Canadiens – listening to music and relaxing with family and friends. He was an avid collector of hockey cards and pins, each piece a small reflection of his lifelong passion for the game.
He could often be found at the Westside Tim Hortons, enjoying the free Wi-Fi, a good coffee, and the company of his buddies. It was one of the many places where his easy-going nature and good humor made him a friend to many.
Animals held a special place in his heart, especially his beloved dog Chia and his cat Ralph. They brought him deep comfort and companionship, and he adored them in return.
He appreciated the simple pleasures: time at the beach, good food on the BBQ, and long games of crib or poker. His life was uncomplicated in the best way – grounded in routine, friendship and the things that made him happiest.
David will be remembered for his kind heart, his generosity, his stubborn streak that made him uniquely himself, and the quiet but meaningful impact he had on the people around him.
He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of 4CS at the Saint John Regional Hospital for the kindness and care they showed David in his final days, as well as Heather for her kindness and patience.
David was predeceased by his parents; brothers Norman and Gary; sisters Susan Daigle, Nancy Garnett and Fern McLean.
