Cyril Langille Obituary

The Langille family are saddened to announce the passing of Cyril Langille at Loch Lomond Village, January 26, 2020.  Cyril will be remembered by all who knew him for his talent, animated story telling, endless positivity and uncommon work ethic. He appreciated every day of his life, his family and friends.

Dad could fix a car, washing machine or a toilet. Build a barn, dining room table or a front porch.  He could whistle, play the mouth organ and a keyboard, but most of all loved to play old time tunes on his button accordion.  In his retirement he started playing for other people and especially enjoyed the fiddle doos that he and mom attended throughout the province.

Cyril was born to Lawson and Doris (Bradshaw) Langille at his parent’s home in St. Martins, May 20, 1930.   He often shared his happy memories of childhood in the little village, with his parents, many cousins, aunts and uncles, grandparents and friends.  He talked of schooldays, fishing, swimming, baseball, sliding in winter, and how family and neighbours looked out for one another. These were hard times and he went to work at an early age. He remembered working in a sawmill at Big Salmon River in his early teens.   The family moved to Saint John where he attended Saint John Vocational School, worked as a longshoreman at night and drove a truck for his father whenever he could.  Cyril went out west to work on the harvest and stayed for over a year, working in Churchill, MB; Sudbury, Ont. and Toronto before returning to Saint John where he would remain.

Cyril eventually went to work for the City of Saint John where he remained for 36 years.  He started out as a helper on garbage truck. He operated all types of heavy equipment and became a foreman.  He was involved in various projects around the city and was very proud of the city’s progress.  For many years he was responsible for snow removal and street cleaning uptown.  Even in his last few years as he battled memory loss, he loved to visit the uptown area where he could still name all the streets and tell a little something about their history.

In 1951 he married Patricia Quinlan, his lifelong partner.  Pat and Cyril had three children, built a house in Loch Lomond, moved to Forest Hills in 1978, built a cottage on Grand Lake and eventually retired to Florida and St. Martins where they enjoyed many happy summers at Century Farms.  Cyril and Pat belonged to the Ties and Frilles square dance Club and danced regularly until they were well in their eighties. They enjoyed any and all social activities, family events and travelling by car throughout Canada and the U.S.  They were long time members of St. Anne’s Parish in Glenn Falls.  Cyril was a member of the Knights of Columbus counsel 937, a proud member of CUPE Local 18 and the ILA.

He leaves behind his wife of 68 years, Patricia.   A sister, Laverne Thomas (Malcolm);  three children: Cathy Watson (Brian),  Dan (Anna Marie) and Michael (Cathie).   Four grandsons;  Kyle Watson,  Tyler , Brendan(Jessica) and James Langille.  10 great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, cousins, other family members including his brother in law Ralph Boyle and sister in law, Doreen Wright and lots of friends. He was predeceased by his parents, sisters in law; Mary Boyle, Ruth and Carol Quinlan, and brothers in law Paul and Benny Quinlan.
