Constance Marie Gauthier
1927 - 2026
It is with an appreciation of a long life well lived that we announce the peaceful passing of Constance Marie Gauthier on March 9th, 2026.
Constance Marie was born on February 15, 1927, to Michael and Mary Mackin (née Moore) in Saint John, New Brunswick and is survived by her three children, Philip, Ryan, and Roxanne, her younger brother Philip (Barbara deceased) Mackin, her dear grandchildren Mark Gauthier, and Claire, Michael, and Simon Portigal as well as many great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
Connie was predeceased by her husband Roch Fernand Gauthier, infant son Mark, her daughter Patricia Portigal, and her siblings Catherine (Warren) Ramsey, Michael (Joyce), James (Helen), Barbara (Gerald, “Bud”) Lawlor, and Richard (Amelia).
Connie loved Saint John and it was there where she was brought up, met and married her husband, and raised her children and children’s children. Together Connie and Roch were an interesting and fun team. They, along with their four young children, Mary Mackin and Richard Mackin left Saint John in the late fifties and moved to Florida and opened a bakery, only to be repatriated to Saint John because of homesickness. Soon after in pursuit of her husband’s “hobby”, Rock and Connie’s family started and operated a small, summer carnival that visited all over New Brunswick. Later, in her early sixties Connie retired from the Saint John Regional Hospital, and in her early seventies Connie moved from the South End of Saint John to Millidgeville where Peter Robichaud, contractor and friend, built her a new family home.
Connie also loved to travel and had the privilege and pleasure to visit various Canadian destinations, the Caribbean, Europe, Russia, and Asia, with her favourites being visiting with her daughter Patricia’s family in Thailand, and Hong Kong. Connie enjoyed spending time with her many friends, especially her girlfriends Marie, Betty, Celestine, Wendy, Dianne, all whom she loved going shopping and restauranteering with. Connie was a crossword lover, a formidable scrabble player, and more than capable, linguistic swordsperson with her son-in-law Mic Portigal. Connie adored the water, beach, and swimming. In her later years, “Ms. Daisy” thoroughly enjoyed being driven along the Saint John River, near the Bay of Fundy, and around southern New Brunswick by her children.
Our family extends our sincere thanks to Connie’s many caregivers including Marife, Diane, Lisa, Ade, and Dawn, to the Extra-Mural personnel and the ongoing care of Dr. B. Knight and Dr. O. Andreani whom all aided Connie to live out her life in her home. Our thanks to everyone.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated from Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 31 Gondola Point Road, Rothesay on Thursday, July 30, 2026 at 11:00am, followed by a reception. Interment will be held in St. Joseph’s Cemetery at a later date.
Donations in Connie’s memory may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
