With great sadness, the family lovingly shares the passing of Brian Donald Garland on September 16, 2025, at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born on May 14, 1954, in Saint John, NB, Brian was the beloved son of the late Ronald “Ronnie” and Florence “Flo” (LeBlanc) Garland.
Family was the center of Brian’s world. Nothing made him happier than time spent with his loved ones, especially his grandchildren, who were truly his pride and joy. He was their biggest cheerleader, always on the sidelines supporting them at games and celebrating every accomplishment with pride.
Brian had a rich and diverse career, wearing many hats over the years. He began his trades career as a boilermaker at Saint John Shipbuilding, where his dedication and strong work ethic quickly allowed him to advance into higher positions. Following a long career at the dry dock, he transferred these skills to other job opportunities, such as Saeplast, Halifax Shipyard, and Bourque’s Industrial. But no matter the job, Brian’s true gift was in how he connected with people: with respect, fairness, and a helping hand that was always extended.
Sports were a lifelong passion for Brian. He loved coaching baseball and basketball, spent time refereeing, and never missed a chance to cheer on his beloved Boston teams. He also enjoyed golf, curling, and bowling.
Family gatherings were among his favorite times. He was famous for manning the barbecue and, at Christmas, for his legendary seafood chowder, which became an anticipated tradition. He also treasured summers at the family campground in Sussex.
Brian’s warmth, humor, and unwavering love will be deeply missed by his wife, Susan; his children, Sheldon (Melissa), Mike (Rebecca), and Randy (Sharon); stepdaughter Lori-Anne (Stephen); grandchildren, Brayden, Caitlin, Ava, Sophia, Carly, Tegan, and Emma; and step-grandchildren, Sydney and Landen. He is also survived by his siblings, Linda Hachey (Levi), Debbie Richard (Steve Alchorn), Brenda Marshall (Brent), Terry Garland (Doris), and Gerard Garland; sister-in-law, Lori Garland; along with many extended family members and friends.
He is now reunited in peace with his parents, his brother Beaver Garland, and his cherished grandson Christian Garland.
To celebrate Brian’s lifelong love of sports and the legacy he left his family, guests are welcome to wear their favorite sports jersey to the visitation. But be warned, showing up in a Yankees or Habs jersey might get you benched!
Arrangements are entrusted to Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road (506-646-2424). Visitation will be held on Sunday, September 21, 2025, from 2:00 – 6:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 4347 Loch Lomond Road, on Monday, September 22, 2025, at 10:00 a.m., reception in the H.O.P.E Centre with interment to follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
For those who wish, donations in Brian’s memory may be made to Ridgewood Veterans Health Wing.
