Bertha "Joyce" Medford Obituary

It is with immense sadness that the family of Bertha Joyce “Joyce” Medford (nee. Button) announces her peaceful passing on December 24, 2025, at the Saint John Regional Hospital, surrounded by her loving family.

Joyce was born in Saint John NB, on September 28, 1937. She was the middle child of 7 and grew up in East Saint John with her parents William “Jimmy” and Phoebe “Jean”, 4 brothers and 2 sisters.

Joyce met the love of her life Eyre “Dirk” Medford in 1955, and they were married a short time later on February 4th,1956. Joyce and Dirk were married for 59 years, having 5 beautiful children. They initially lived between both New Brunswick and Ontario, then finally settled and bought their first home in Nerepis NB in 1977. Come retirement, they moved, and enjoyed living in Sooke BC for 6 years, before returning to their home in Nerepis. They remained there until Dirks passing in 2015.

A devout follower of Jesus, and an avid prayer warrior, faith was at the centre of Joyce’s life. She loved attending church weekly, with North Side Assembly being her most recent church family. She also enjoyed her weekly church programs on tv, and reading her bible daily.

Joyce loved singing, especially old gospel hymns. She also enjoyed black and white movies, playing card games, doing puzzles with friends and family, and the occasional DQ ice cream. Joyce lived a very full life in her 88 years. She will be remembered fondly for her smile, kindness, quick wit and of course her cooking.

She is survived by her children: Bruce (Diane), Wendy, James (Claudia), Darlene “Letha” (Eric), Vivian Lee and Step Daughter Kelly (Hank); Grandchildren: Pheobe, Daniel, Troy, Allan, Erika, Vanessa, Sean, Samantha, Lynzie, Sarah, Conrad, Peter, Madison; step grandchildren Sandy and Melissa; 21 great and 7 great-great grandchildren; brothers: Albert, Raymond (Gail), and Wayne (Ruth); sister Sarah (Peter); as well as many nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by both of her parents, her husband Eyre “Dirk”, brother Doug, sister Francis (Kenny), sister-in-Law Betty (Albert), son-in-law Gary (Wendy), as well as grandson David and great-great grandson Dawson.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the Saint John Ambulance Service, as well as the staff and Doctors in both the Neurology and Palliative care units in Saint John Regional Hospital. Your kindness and care did not go unnoticed and was appreciated beyond measure.
