Barry McManus Obituary

It is with great sadness the family announces the passing of Barry Kenneth McManus which occurred on Sunday, August 20th, 2023, age 81, at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born June 24th, 1942, in Saint John, he is the son of the late Nellie and Greg McManus.

Barry went to St. Roses School and Vocational.  He was a Plumber & Pipe Fitter by trade and worked at many construction sites.  He was a loyal member of Local 213.  Barry held many offices for his Union, from President to Business Manager and raised thousands of dollars for Juvenile Diabetes research.  He was a member of Branch 69 Legion and an Ambassador for Juvenile Diabetes.  He had many trips to Miramichi where he enjoyed salmon fishing and hunting with his friends. He took many trips with his wife to Las Vegas and enjoyed travelling to PEI with his family for Old Home Week.  Barry was a great cribbage player and became Canadian Champion in 2000.  

Barry is survived by his loving and devoted wife Shirley (Wharton-Van Wart) McManus of 54 years; son Bruce Van Wart (Tabatha); daughters Daphne Flanagan, Glenna Hardy (Troy), Heather McManus; grandchildren Geoff Green (Tammy), Jacob Van Wart, Baylee Van Wart (Cecil McCavour), Ben Van Wart, Gregory McManus Scribner; sister Sandra Cameron; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.  Along with his parents, Barry was predeceased by his brother Doug McManus and sister Barb Delaney.

Thank you to the doctors, nurses and staff of SJRH Palliative Care and to Extra Mural for your daily support.  A special thank you to Krista and Pat Scribner.  Your kindness and compassion will not be forgotten.

Arrangements are under the direction of Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road (506-646-2424).  A service to celebrate the life of Barry, will take place in the Fundy chapel on Monday, August 28th at 10 a.m. Interment will be held at Holy Cross Cemetery.  Donations in memory of Barry may be made to Juvenile Diabetes or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
