It is with great sadness and loving remembrance that we announce the passing of Barry Ernest Duke on November 4, 2025, at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Barry left this world peacefully, comforted by visits from family and friends who filled his final days with laughter, stories, and love.
Barry was born in Saint John 78 years ago, to his loving parents, the late William and Nellie (née Munn) Duke.
Barry is survived by his beloved wife of 35 years, Sandy (née Currie) — the love of his life. He was a devoted father to Michael (Mary Grace), Amy (Andrew), and Karen (Wayne), and a caring stepfather to Douglas (Candy) and Serena (Blair). He was a loving grandfather to Tia (Bret), Fisher, and Parker, and a cherished Papa to Vincent (Anna) and Alexis. Barry was also a proud and doting Great Papa to Kierstyn, Nicholas, River, and the soon-to-arrive baby boy Johnson.
He will be deeply missed by his siblings Bonnie (George, deceased), Donald (Joan, deceased), Danny (Mary Lou), Gary, Heather (Russell), and Marlene (Tammy), as well as by his many nieces and nephews who adored him.
Barry had a distinguished 30-year career in the Canadian Armed Forces, including tour of duty in Cyprus. He served first with the Regiment of Canadian Guards, then the 3rd Royal Canadian Regiment (3RCR) and ended his career in logistics. Many in the Saint John community will remember his friendly face from his many years as a commissionaire on the Harbour Bridge.
An avid athlete, Barry enjoyed baseball, hockey, volleyball, and golf, and he was especially skilled when he had a dart, bowling ball, or horseshoe in his hand.
Barry’s retirement was everything he’d hoped it would be — filled with family, friends, and just enough mischief to keep life interesting. Whether relaxing at the trailer, trying (and occasionally succeeding) to beat his brother Donny at crib, or sharing giggles and ice cream with the grandkids, Barry found joy in the simple moments and was always there to lend a helping hand.
Above all, Barry will be remembered as a truly great person — generous, patient, and endlessly kind. He will be forever missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
Visitation will take place at Fundy Funeral Home on Saturday, November 8, 2025, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. There will be a Celebration of Life at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 69 on Sunday November 9 from 1:00pm to 5:00pm a fitting place to share stories, laughter, and memories of Barry.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the wonderful staff of the Saint John Regional Hospital, and kindly requests that any donations in Barry’s memory be made to the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation.
