The world has lost a truly great man. Alan Dean Gutsch passed away on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, at Bobby’s Hospice, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Brandon, Manitoba, on February 3, 1974, Al was the son of Herb and the late Lorna (Agar) Gutsch.
Al is survived by his wife of 17 years, and partner in everything, Kristie Garland. He was a proud dad to his daughter Hailie Garland, and a loving brother to his sister Aleta Gutsch. He also leaves behind his Maritime family: Lori Garland, Trisha Shannon (Bill), Kerrie Garland (Matt), and Gerard Garland. Uncle Al was well-loved by his niece and nephews — Taylor, Mark, and Wyatt — and will be missed by many extended family members in Western Canada.
Al had a way of making friends everywhere he went. So many people cared about him, and it really showed — especially in his final days. That care meant the world to him. He also leaves behind his cat Hope, nicknamed “Big Chick,” because, well… she was scared of everything, and he got a real kick out of that.
Al was a proud Canadian hockey fan who cheered for any team wearing the maple leaf, and he was always up for an adventure. He loved to travel, and his favorite places were Old Quebec, Paris, and anywhere warm and sunny down south. He had a sharp wit, a sarcastic sense of humor, and a reputation for being the hardest-working guy around. As a plumber for many years, he not only fixed pipes but built lasting friendships. Somewhere along the way, he earned the nickname “Awesome Al” — and he truly lived up to it.
Arrangements are under the care of Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Rd., Saint John, NB. Visitation will take place on Monday, July 7, 2025, from 2–4 PM and 6–8 PM. A funeral service will be held in the Fundy Chapel the next day, Tuesday, July 8, at 12 PM. Al will be laid to rest at Ocean View Memorial Gardens. The service will be livestreamed, and can be watched here: Click Here
