It is with sadness but a sense of gratitude for a long life, well lived, that we say goodbye to Eugene Clair Bovaird, who peacefully passed away on December 10, 2019 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. He was born in Saint John on February 15, 1931 to the late Ronald and Vera (Sherwood) Bovaird and was the loving husband of 61 years to his wife, Myretta (Ellis) Bovaird.
Eugene was a Masonry Instructor, beginning at NBCC in Bathurst and then moving to NBCC Saint John. He was a very skilled man when it came to his trade, but also when it came to all of his yearly projects. Every year he designed, made, and put together something different for his family – whether it be bird houses, ornaments or carvings – he lovingly crafted these items to give as gifts. He was a nature lover who always enjoyed working in his gardens and flower beds. He enjoyed spending time at the cottage in Sussex with his family, feeding the birds that visited his home, and working with as many tools as he could lay his hands on. He was an active member of St. David’s United Church and in his younger years he taught Sunday School when he lived in Bathurst. He was also a 30-year member of the Men of Fundy Chorus. Eugene was a wonderful father and a very devoted grandfather, who got tremendous enjoyment out of listening to his granddaughter play the piano. He was a very kind and considerate, sensitive man and he will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
In addition to his wife, Myretta, he is survived by his three daughters, Barbara Bovaird (Dale Cole), Christine Bovaird and Colleen Bovaird-Liberty (Ryan); granddaughter Julia Bovaird and grandnephew, Shawn Druet; brother Keith; sisters, Jeanette Jarvis (Bert), Arvilla Jonah (Donald) and Arlene Eadie (Roland); special nephew by marriage, David Druet; along with several nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
Along with his parents, Eugene was predeceased by his special niece, Cindy Druet and sister-in-law, Carole Bovaird.
His family would like to extend their deepest thanks to the Dialysis Unit at the Saint John Regional Hospital, A2B Transport staff and to his special friends, Jim and Pam Lloyd for all the care, compassion and kindness shown to Eugene throughout the last few years.
Arrangements are entrusted to Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Rd (646-2424) where visitation will be held on Friday from 2-4 & 6-8pm. A funeral service will take place on Saturday, December 14, 2019 at 2pm from St. David’s United Church (7 Gondola Point Road, Rothesay). Interment will be held at a later date.
For those who wish, donations in Eugene’s memory made to the SPCA- Animal Rescue League, Romero House or to the charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by his family.
