Doug Merrithew Obituary

MERRITHEW, GUY DOUGLAS – It is with great sadness the family announces the passing of Guy Douglas Merrithew which occurred at St. Joseph’s Hospital on Tuesday, January 14th, 2020, surrounded by his family.  Born 1936, in Saint John, he was the son of the late Guy Albion and Lena Ada (Stairs) Merrithew.  Doug worked in construction and masonry throughout his career and was also a Ship Liner with the Long Shoreman Association.

Doug, better known as “Dowie”, was a softball pitcher and he lead his team to many Provincial and Atlantic championships.  He was a member of the Jervis Bay Memorial #53 where he ended his softball journey and was known in the softball world for never wearing a ball glove.

Doug loved to swim and won many trophies in his earlier years.  He was an avid hunter, fisherman and outdoorsman and could throw a mean game of horseshoes. He also loved Harness Racing and enjoyed his time at the track.  Doug was the strong silent type, however once you saw his contagious grin, you knew that he was going to hit you with one of his famous one-liners.  He was a quiet gentleman who created a lot of lasting memories throughout his lifetime and he will be deeply missed.

Doug is survived by his loving and devoted wife Rhoda (Garnett) of 59 years; son Peter Merrithew (Stacey); daughters Linda Bizeau (Wayne)of Saint John, Marianna Wilson (Darren) of Nevada USA; grandchildren Breanna (Jamie), Makoda, Brandon, Taylor, Michael(Taylor), Jennifer(Brian), great grandchild Jack and long-time buddy Albert Sproul; as well as several nieces, nephews and friends.  Besides his parents, Doug was predeceased by his brothers Haldene, Gerald, Donald and sisters Wynona and Anna.  He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

A special thank you to the CAM Unit at St. Joseph’s Hospital for your kindness and compassion.
