It is with great sadness the family announces the passing of Winston James Smith which occurred at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Saturday, October 3rd, 2015.  He was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Marjorie O. (Andrews) on April 22nd, 2009.

Winston is survived by his daughters Brenda Allen (Hank) and Barbara Kingston (David) of Saint John; sons David Smith, Douglas Smith (Wanda) of Saint John, and Daniel Smith (Julia) of Fort Saskatchewan, AB; sister Hilda Campbell of Fredericton; 15 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; devoted dog Pepper; as well as several nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by brothers Ernest and Lee Smith and sister Ellen Malato.

Winston was a life-time resident of the city’s “North End” before retiring to the Cambridge-Narrows community.  He served his country in the Navy during war time.  During his career he worked “the winter port” for a few years before becoming a master carpenter for the City of Saint John.  He then was employed by the provincial government’s New Brunswick Co-Op Housing Program as a Housing Inspector retiring in 1989.

Winston loved to take another point of view for the sake of a good argument and to tease his buddies.  He loved working in his workshop from which he made extra funds in the early years to support his growing family.  He enjoyed building wooden kitchen cabinets in the workshop basement for neighbors, friends and family.  In earlier years he also enjoyed deer hunting with his Chipman Buddies and playing cards.  After he retired he enjoyed golfing.

Arrangements are under the direction of Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road (646-2424) with visitation being held on Tuesday, October 6th from 6 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday, October 7th from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. with a Tribute to a Veteran Service taking place at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.  A Celebration of Life will take place from Full Gospel Assembly (34 Mount Pleasant Ave. Saint John East) on Thursday, October 8th at 11 a.m. Donations in memory of Winston may be made to Bobby’s Hospice or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
