Thomas Paul GillenJanuary 15, 1938 ~ September 29, 2016 (age 78)
It is with great sadness the family announces the passing of Thomas “Tom” Paul Gillen, much loved husband of Freda (Brownell) Gillen, which occurred on Thursday September 29, 2016 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born 1938 in Saint John, he was the son of the late Thomas and Marguerite (McCormack) Gillen. Tom was the last surviving member of his immediate family. In addition to his wife Freda, Tom will be greatly missed by his niece Christine (Jamie) Hutchison and her children Philip and Kathryn Ouellette; Freda’s girls Madeline, Debbie-Jo, Ruth, Cindy, Elizabeth and Leslie (deceased); sisters-in-law Nola Gillen and Mary Gillen; several nieces and nephews and numerous friends. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers Harry, Frank and Charlie; sister Alice Parks and a nephew Danny Parks.
Tom spoke often of his claim to fame; when he chauffeured the one and only Johnny Cash to the Admiral Beatty years ago. Tom had many friends and was referred to by them as the “Big Guy” as he always watched over and protected them. His good friend Al Jones will always remember him as a proud north ender who was a long time respected member of the Saint John Moosehead Basketball team who won many championships. Tom enjoyed many great times on McCormick’s Island on the Kennebecasis River with his family, friends and his band “Three Tonnes of Harmony” where he often hosted parties and family reunions.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Palliative Care Unit (SJRH) for the wonderful care given to Tom.
Arrangements are under the direction of Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road (646-2424). A private family graveside service will be held at a later date. Donations may be made to the SPCA Animal Rescue or the Joshua Group. www.fundyfuneralhome.com
