Welcome to the memorial page for

Peter Jacobus Scholten

February 17, 2015

It is with great sadness the family announces the death of Peter Scholten, who passed away suddenly at home on February 17, 2015.  Born in Huissen, Netherlands on August 1, 1928 to the late Gerardus and Maria (Eggenhuizen).  Peter is predeceased by Wilhelmina (Miep) his wife of 59 years; brothers Henk, and Leo and sister Willy.  Peter is survived by his children Gerry Scholten (Pamela) of Saint John, Peter Scholten Jr. (Sharon) of Florenceville, Carla Scholten (Timothy Crowell) of Ste. Croix N.S., Rose Magleave (Mark) of Grand Bay-Westfield, Ben Scholten (Mary Ellen) of Rothesay, Ted Scholten (Kathleen) of Fort Wayne IN, Christine MacDonald (Ian) of Toronto, and Emily Scholten of Saint John; sisters Thea Bouwmeister of Dundalk, Lies of Arnhem NL., and Iet of Huissen NL; brother-in-law Arnold Derks of Saint John; 14 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews in Canada and the Netherlands.  Peter was a loving husband, father, Opa, and brother. He studied horticulture in the Netherlands and served in the Dutch army in Indonesia.  Peter and Miep married and immigrated to Canada in 1954 with everything they owned packed in suitcases and trunks, speaking not a word of English.  Peter worked 17 years for the District 20 School Board as a horticulturalist, then as a private landscaper for JD Irving Ltd.  At the age of 50 he set out on his own and formed Scholten’s Landscape Ltd.  He contributed to his community and church.  He was a founding Board Member and past President of the Saint John Co-op.  Peter was a founding Board Member of Landscape New Brunswick from which he received the Lifetime Achievement Award. Peter’s enduring legacy can be seen in the landscapes he created, and his home was a showcase of colour in both flower and vegetable gardens.  He instilled in his children a strong work ethic and pride in a job well-done.  As Dad always said, “If you can list everything you did today, then you haven’t done enough.”   He will always be remembered and respected for his honesty, integrity, and his natural ability to make people smile.
