Welcome to the memorial page for

Peter Nielsen

April 16, 1930 ~ December 31, 2017 (age 87) 87 Years Old

With heavy hearts, the family of Peter Nielsen announces his passing, which occurred at the Saint John Regional Hospital on December 31st, 2017. Peter was born in Nustrop, Denmark on April 16th, 1930; a son of the late Andreas and Helga (Iversen) Nielsen, and the loving husband of the late Josephine (Sutton) Nielsen. Peter grew up in the small farming town of Ørum, and came to Canada in 1952. He was on the train, and was dropped off in Renforth, which is where he stayed. When he arrived in Saint John, he worked for the city doing landscaping; he later branched out and started his own landscaping business. Peter’s landscaping truly helped shape the face of Saint John; you can’t go to a Tim Hortons without seeing gardening that Peter did, as well as King’s Square, and the Public Gardens. Also, Peter was asked to do the floral arrangements at the Admiral Beatty Hotel, for the Queen’s visit in 1976. Peter was extremely dedicated to his work, and he worked hard, up until his health forced him to retire at the age of 83. He also helped with building the first YMCA in Saint John. Peter was loved and cherished by his customers for his vast knowledge and expertise in all things to do with gardening and landscaping. When he wasn’t working, he loved travelling the back roads, enjoyed cross country skiing, swimming, and conversations with just about anyone. Peter was a loving, caring father and grandfather, and a great family provider. Surviving are his children; Inger Nielsen, John Stevenson, Shelly Nielsen; siblings Vagner Nielsen, Anne-Lisa, and Lilly, grandchildren Tiffany, Chelsea, Danielle and Branden, several great-grandchildren, and his living in-laws. Along with his wife and parents, Peter was pre-deceased by siblings Inger Magrete, Elsa Marie, and a grandson, Matthew. Resting at Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road, Saint John (646-2424) with a celebration of his life being held on Monday from 6-8 p.m. For those who wish, remembrances to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, or the Saint John Regional Hospital – Palliative Care Unit would be greatly appreciated by the family. Online condolences may be placed at www.fundyfuneralhome.com

“We all thank him for the 87 years he gave us.”
