Mary Martha Butler

Mary "Martha" (Chouinard) Butler, August 17th, 1952-December 20th, 2008.
Martha passed away peacefully, with her loving family by her side, on December 20th, at the age of 56 at The Saint John Regional Hospital, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Saint John NB, she was the daughter of Helen (Dwyer) Chouinard. Martha will be greatly missed by her loving husband of 30 years, Tom Butler; her daughters Jill Butler of Toronto and Kate Butler of Fredericton. Martha is survived by two brothers: Vernon (Patricia) Chouinard and Peter (Terri) Chouinard both of Saint John. Her brothers-in-law Bill Hooper and Fred (Brenda) Butler and Sister-in- law Carol Vallee, all of Saint John. She will also be missed by nieces; Krista (Michael) Hartery of Grand-Bay, Lisa Chouinard, Sarah Chouinard and Leah Butler, all of Saint John, and nephews Craig (Carmel) Chouinard of Fredericton, Brent Hooper of Saint John, Jonathan Chouinard of Chance Harbour and Ryan Butler of Saint John and great-nephews Keegan, Noah and Declan Hartery, as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins, especially those in Balmoral, NB. Martha will be deeply missed by lifelong friends Paulette McIlveen and Linda Stamers-Gaunce. Martha is pre-deceased by her father Amedee Chouinard, her sister Anita (Chouinard) Hooper and her infant brother Joseph William at birth.
Martha was a resident of Loch Lomond for the majority of her life. She was a graduate of Simonds High School and attended Atlantic Business College. Martha began her professional career with NBTEL for a number of years and later took time off to be with her family. Martha returned to work as a school secretary and in the payroll offices, both for School District 8.
Martha was a very positive and friendly person known for her beautiful smile always ready to help, she was an avid reader, enjoyed sewing, knitting and cross stitching.
She volunteered for many years with Girl Guides of Canada and was involved in many of her daughters' activities. She was extremely proud of her family and was at her happiest when all were together. Martha was a wonderful role model to her daughters, teaching compassion and always thinking of others before herself. The extent of her strength was evident as she traveled along her journey never giving up, and always facing each challenge with courage, never dwelling on her illness, always more concerned about others around her.
