John Wesley "Jack" Brewer

Jack is now with his amazing family in heaven.  He passed away on May 14th, 2017 at Ridgewood Veteran’s Wing.  Many thanks to the staff at Ridgewood for the exceptional care they provided. Jack was a WWII Veteran serving with the Canadian Technical Training Corp.

Jack was an awesome father and father-in-law, a fantastic grandfather and a model husband. We should all aspire to be like him. Married to Edna for 69 years, they travelled and danced the world together. Of all their worldly travels, they were the happiest at their Mackins Lake Cottage which they built themselves.

Born in 1927 in Saint John, he was the son of the late William and Mabel (Connell) Brewer. After his Mom passed at an early age Jack grew up in the Wiggins Home for Boys near Rockwood Park.
Family came first for Jack. His love of his sisters Kay (Bill), Connie (Mel), Muriel (Bill) and brothers Bill (Grace), Kenny (Joyce) and Tommy (Millie).  Jack also loved his sisters-in-law Pat, Dot (Fred) and brothers-in-law Bill (Shirley), Bob (Geraldine) and Bud (Mary). Then the love of his life Edna Mitchell, his daughter Judy (Bob) and son David (Debbie) and how he loved his grandchildren Jeffrey (Laura), Jaclyn (Matthew), Kathleen (Steve) and Adam (Briar). 

Retiring in 1982, Jack worked as an accounts clerk for Maple Leaf Mills and at the Sugar Refinery. Jack was a selfless volunteer. Starting at a young age coaching many sports teams his son David played on. Friends of David said Jack helped turn their lives around. Jack was an avid sports player himself.

The Lion’s Den was Jack’s second home. He was a Simonds Lion for 52 years. He received the highest awards a Lion could receive in Life Member of the Club International, Melvin Jones Award, Brian Stevenson Award, Life Member of the Lions Foundation of Canada, Lion of the Year and many President Appreciation awards. Jack was also a Legion Member of Branch 69. 

Jack had many talents. His love of dance which lead him to meeting Edna at an Orange Hall Dance, his amazing singing voice, his whistles, playing the spoons and wiggling his ears. Jack was an amazing Santa when his children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews were young. He was Barney the Clown in many Saint John Parades and a member of Clowns Canada. Jack was a talented mathematician and loved to write humorous poetry.

One story we will never forget. Jack was at work and looked out his window to see a family having car problems, down he goes to help. He took the family in to his home for several months while their van was being repaired and they figured their life out. “Yes that was what Jack was all about” “We Love You Jack”

Arrangements are under the direction of Fundy Funeral Home, Saint John (646-2424). We would like to invite you to a graveside service which will take place at Ocean View Memorial Gardens on Thursday, May 18, 2017 at 1:30 p.m.  A reception will follow at The Lion’s Den at 5 p.m.   All are welcome. Remembrances in memory of Jack may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
