Charles Gregory Daley

The death of Charles Gregory “Charlie” Daley, loving husband of Emma (Gallant) Daley occurred peacefully on Friday September 10, 2010 at the Saint John Regional Hospital.  Born in 1921 in Saint John he was the only child of the late Walter J. and Gladys M. (Heenan) Daley.  Charlie grew up in the south end attending St. John the Baptist School, St. Vincent’s Boys School and Saint John Vocational School.  Upon the outbreak of World War Two, Charlie immediately joined the RCNVR through HMCS Brunswicker.  He left for Engineering Branch training in Halifax shortly after turning 18.  He was assigned to the corvette HMCS Camrose, seeing action in the North Atlantic, North Africa and the Mediterranean.  In 1943 he was on the commissioning of the frigate HMCS Swansea, in Esquimalt, B.C. prior to it’s sailing through the Panama Canal.  Charlie served the rest of the war on the Swansea, seeing U Boat action in the Caribbean, North and South Atlantic, and the Mediterranean theaters.  Swansea supported the D Day Normandy landings.  Charlie was discharged from the Navy as a Stoker Petty Officer, in late 1945.

Before joining the Saint John Police Department in 1950, Charlie worked in retail sales and the winterport.  Serving 10 years as a Police Officer, Charlie worked a number of different units including a stint as one of the first Motorcycle officers in the city.

Charlie joined Canada Post in 1960, being instrumental in the new Postal Code system rollout in the late seventies, prior to retirement in 1985.
After retirement Charlie went on to acquire his amateur (Ham) radio license and also kept busy with wood working.  With a keen interest in technology, Charlie was on his computer and email daily, well into his eighties.

Charles and Emma bought their first home in Forest Hills in 1960, and were founding members of St. Ann’s Catholic Church.  They were very active in the parish.  Charlie provided leadership when the first Boy Scout troop was established at St. Ann’s in the early 1960’s.  He was a member and Past President of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #69 and was a District Commander of Saint John District of the Royal Canadian Legion.  Charles was also an active union executive member in the late 1960’s.  

In addition to his devoted wife Emma of 56 years, he is survived by his loving children; son Michael Daley of Fort McMurray, AB; daughters Lynn Capson (Bob) and Gerarda Borden (Rod) both of Saint John; grandchildren Curtis Daley, Angie Daley, Michelle Trainor, Jennifer Capson, Michael Capson, Ann-Marie Borden, Matthew Borden and Sarah Borden; great grandchildren Madison, Connor, Morgan and Leah; several cousins, nieces and nephews.  

Resting at Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road, Saint John (646-2424) with visitations on Sunday September 12, 2010 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A tribute to a Veteran service will be held at the funeral home Sunday evening at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated from St. Ann’s Catholic Church on Monday September 13, 2010 at 12:00 p.m. Interment will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. The family would appreciate donations made to St. Ann’s Church Building Fund, Romero House Soup Kitchen or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
