Barbara A. Phillips

Barb, 71, of Grand Bay-Westfield, passed away on Friday morning, January 20, 2017, following a hard fought battle with illness at the Saint John Regional Hospital. She is survived by her son Kris (Véronique); her daughter Sherri; her grandchildren Ava-Lynn and Evan; her brother David (Cathy); and her sister-in-law Kathy. Barb was predeceased by her devoted husband (Jerry) of 42 years, her brother (Buddy), and her parents (Geraldine and George Day).

Barb was known as a tenacious spirit, with boundless energy when it came to helping others, motoring around town, or when it came to bagging the next bargain. An avid hunter of the "blue light special" and the next big Bingo jackpot, Barb likely played a key role in supporting the economies of countless communities along the Eastern Seaboard of Canada and the U.S. Never tiring, and always smiling, Barb was a presence around town and at community events who was rarely able to travel more than 100m without encountering someone she knew.

Barb will be most remembered for her roughly 50 years of dedicated and selfless volunteerism in the Saint John region in support of her church, the Scouting movement and with the River Valley Lions. It was for her combined efforts that she was awarded the Governor General's Caring Canadian Award (2014), and later the Sovereign's Medal for Volunteers (2016). A caring person, a dear friend, a dedicated wife, and a loving mother and nanny, Barb will be deeply missed by all those whose lives she touched. May she at last find peace and be free of any discomfort as she rejoins her ever-loving husband.

Arrangements are under the direction of Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road (646-2424) with visitation being held Wednesday evening, January 25th from 6 to 8 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, January 26th at 11 a.m. at the Grand Bay Baptist followed by an interment at Cedar Hill Extension Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association, Canadian Cancer Society, or to a cause that is near and dear to the donors' hearts.
